Thais St. Julien, age 73 years, died on Thursday, January 3, 2019 of Alzheimer’s disease, after being diagnosed in April of 2017. She was a native and lifelong resident of New Orleans and an accomplished musician. Daughter of the late George W. and Rosemary Bourda St. Julien. Sister of Dr. Marcus St. Julien. Also survived by an aunt, Johan St. Julien and several cousins.
The soprano studied under Charles Paddock, Virginia MacWatters and Norma Newton, and was Co-Director (with Milton G. Scheuermann, Jr.) of the New Orleans Musica da Camera, which specializes in music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and has toured throughout the Gulf South. She was also Foundress of Vox Feminae, the female choral extension of the MdC.
St. Julien appeared with The New Opera Theatre, Pro Arte Chorale, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Great Neck Chorale Society, International Dvorak Festival, Lyric Opera of Dallas, New Orleans Opera Association, Southwest Chamber Orchestra and Jefferson Performing Arts Society.
In 1997 the soprano was Dirce in the Opera Quotannis at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. Miss. St. Julien was possibly the only singer in the 20th century to sing the florid, difficult role complete and unadulterated. She was also the recipient of the 2007 Louisiana Artist Fellowship in Music.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Monday, January 7, 2019 at 11:00 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 1031 South Carrollton Avenue, with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM. The Rev. Jim Morrison will officiate. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements by Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home of Metairie.
