Richard Murphy

March 3, 1947 ~ February 25, 2023 (age 75) 75 Years Old

Tribute

Richard “Richie” Stephen Murphy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on March 3, 1947, and called in his final bet on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at the age of 75. Richie was a gambling man, who loved taking chances and challenging the odds, and that’s how he lived life—always ready to drop a dollar on the underdog.

Richie is preceded in death by his parents, Gerard Patrick Murphy and Lois Darder Murphy. He is survived by two sisters, Debra Murphy and Raynell Murphy; his nephew Scott Machutas; his nieces Kelly Machutas Rostad (Erick) and Susan Machutas Guidroz (Shawn); and his great nieces and nephews, Gerard Guidroz, Claire Guidroz, Kate Guidroz, Cade Rostad and Naya Rostad.

Richie graduated from Warren Eastern High School in 1965, joined the United States Army shortly thereafter, and served in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968. He was a master of odd jobs until he placed a moneyline bet and found a long-term home at Wagner-Truax, where he worked as a maintenance manager until he retired.

Richie looked forward to the thrill and excitement of the horse races, and just about every Saturday, he could be found betting on his favorites at the race track or watching the races with his buddies at a favorite bar. He was particularly fond of the annual Weenie Dog Races. On Sundays, there was good ol’ football betting, and Richie could be found glued to the TV urging on the battling teams—his favorite was the one he had the money on.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life honoring Richie on—what would be his 76th birthday—Friday, March 3, 2023, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at “The Cabin,” 4712 Utica Street, Metairie, La 70006.

The family asks to kindly consider a donation in Richie’s memory to the Disabled American Veterans.
