Alvin Lee Weddle Jr.

Alvin Lee Weddle, Jr., affectionately known as “Doc” or “The Teacher,” on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at 7:20 AM, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loved ones. Doc was born to the late Alvin Lee and Grace Weddle on August 10, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Doc was blessed with a large, loving family who survives him, including his beloved wife, Beth, sons, Chris and Philip, daughter, Cindy, daughter-in-law, Katie Sweeney, and son-in-law, Michael D. Mitchel, II. Six grandchildren, McKenzie Elizabeth, Jillian Marie, Dalton Patrick, Michael Christopher, Gracelyn Elizabeth, and Rosemary Mae, loved him immensely. 

A Jesuit High School alumnus, class of 1961, Al enjoyed playing basketball for the Blue Jays. He continued this love for basketball as an assistant basketball coach at Jesuit, 1964-1965. He graduated from Loyola University, New Orleans, with B.B.A. and M.Ed., 1964 & 1968. In 1972, Weddle received his J.D. from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law. He served as assistant basketball coach at Loyola University, New Orleans, from 1965-1970. He taught Latin and English at Jesuit High School from 1964-1970. Thereafter, he instructed at De La Salle High School from 1971-1985 and taught Theology (Morality), Civics, and Street Law (Law Studies). Weddle introduced the Street Law course at De La Salle. Due to his efforts to improve education in Louisiana, in September of 1974, he was commissioned Honorary State Senator for Louisiana for his continued hard work and active participation in the State Government of Louisiana. From 1985-2002, Weddle continued his career in education at Jesuit High School, teaching American History, Theology, Law Studies, and Louisiana Politics. There, he also introduced the Street Law course and a Louisiana Politics course. Former students still rave about Doc’s unorthodox teaching style, which centered around life lessons, classroom discussion, and, most importantly, each student’s purpose in life. Many will never forget the image of Doc strutting down the halls with swagger: adorned with his sunglasses and a blaring boombox. Simultaneously, Weddle practiced as a self-employed attorney from 1972-2004 and as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for the City of New Orleans 1974-2004. However, teaching was his passion.

Doc will forever be remembered for his charismatic, witty personality and the way he lived with an absolute zest for life! His contagious, energetic personality inspired those who were blessed to meet him. He preached the importance of having a strong Christ-centered family and living life to the fullest. Known for his many sayings, one cannot mention Doc without referencing his dynamic quotes or advice:
·Do what makes you happy. 
·Have a dream and follow that dream. 
·Don’t conform for the sake of conforming. 
·Do not live a life of quiet desperation. 
·Be active. 
·Do what you want regardless of peer-pressure. 
·God wants you to be fully alive; He wants you to be happy. 
·What you should do for a living is what you would do for free. 
·You only need to please two people in life, God and yourself. 
·Nobody is better than anyone else; people are just different. 
·Because we don’t agree with what somebody does, it does not make that person wrong and us right. 
·We can’t all be the star athlete, genius, famous actor…but we can all be nice.
·Thank God for the last minute, because without it, we wouldn’t get anything done.

Doc was a beloved teacher who loved Christmas, sports, sports radio, dancing, reading, laughter, running, and visiting Pensacola Beach, riding waves, but most of all, he loved his family. He will be remembered as a one-of-a kind husband, dad, grandfather, teacher, and friend. To him, there were no strangers. We are all connected and meant to serve God.

Well, Doc, you left an awfully huge hole! With every breath we take, we will miss you more than words can describe. We pray to meet again and hold you tightly in our arms. We know all in Heaven will enjoy your very loud, one-man show! Our love for you is eternal! Until we meet again!

An 11:00 am Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at St. Catherine of Siena, 105 Bonnabel Blvd. Metaire, LA followed by 
12:00 pm Mass. Family and friends are welcomed.
